Staying at Hotel La Tour - Birmingham & Dining at their Restaurant Aalton

For our Anniversary we decided to try Hotel La Tour in Birmingham City Centre.  From the outside the hotel looked fairly swanky with nice clean lines and an art deco feel.

We arrived at around 7pm and was checked in by the Receptionist.  There were several Check-in machines in the Reception area that we could have used, but as it wasn't busy we decided to speak to a human rather than a machine.

Our Room was situated on the 4th Floor which we were glad about.  I had read a few reviews where guests had complained that staying on level 3 or below did not make for a fantastic view and could be noisy.

The view from our Room

There was a function on in their function room, and at bed time I must admit that we could hear the music quite loudly as we were directly over where the room was located.

The Executive room we stayed in was lovely.  It had everything we needed and was decorated in a very contemporary style.  The bathroom had a kind of wet room style shower which I loved.  I was surprised that the television was not HD and only had freeview channels.

Our night was all planned out!  We were to start with drinks at the hotel bar, then dine at the restaurant and listen to the live music (that we were told would be on) somewhere in between.

We both felt a little disappointed that there was no live music, however we were happy sitting outside and sipping our rather expensive drinks while munching on some Chilli Popcorn that they had placed down with the drinks and just watch the world go by.

At 8.30pm we made our way to the Hotel's Restaurant called 'Aalton'.  It was nicely decorated, as was the whole of the hotel.  The service was great, although there weren't many other guests dining in the Hotel which to be honest did detract somewhat from the bustling atmosphere that often makes an enjoyable night.

The waitress brought us some bread and olive oil which kept us going until our food came.  We were also told that as we had ordered a Starter and a Main course we were entitled to a free glass of house wine each. This was a welcome surprise as we had found the drinks menu very pricey.

I had the Liver Parfait to Start which came with some delightfully tasty sweet chutney. It was everything I could of wanted in a starter and the portion size was fairly decent too.  My hubby had the Squid which again was a good sized portion and he really enjoyed it.

We had a glass of Prosecco each to toast our Anniversary in between courses.

The mains came, my Husband had ordered the Steak & Brummie Ale Pie.  It looked amazing with its huge crust top.  He has also ordered a side of Green Beans with Pancetta and another side of Creamed Potatoes. The Green Beans were grown on the Hotel's very own roof garden and did taste exceedingly fresh, however, the potatoes arrived cold which was a shame.

I opted for the Hanger Steak Skewer.  The meat had been cooked so beautifully that the steak was extremely tender and melted in my mouth.  This came with a portion of fries too.

We would both definitely recommend the food and the service, just wish there had been a little more atmosphere, although we entertained ourselves and spent the evening laughing and joking.

The night's sleep was most comfortable as the bed was very roomy (a much bigger sized bed compared to what we are used to).

Breakfast was also served in Restaurant Aalton.  I must say it was one of the best breakfasts I have had in a hotel.  There was a lovely hot self serve buffet available with Beans, Egg (scrambled & fried), Mushrooms, Hash Browns, Tomatoes, Bacon and Sausages.

Toast or bread was also available with Butter, Jam, Marmalade or Marmite.  There were Pastries, Muffins, Yoghurt, fresh Fruit, Ham and Cheese slices.  The waiter came and poured us tea/coffee and kept us topped up when he could see that we had an empty cup.

Overall we both really enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend the Hotel and Restaurant to others.
